A city, up close

York is enclosed almost entirely by its medieval city walls, one of the best-preserved sets in England, with York Minster — one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in northern Europe — rising at its centre. The Shambles, a narrow medieval street of overhanging timber-framed buildings, is one of the oldest shopping streets in Europe. The city was founded by the Romans as Eboracum and later became a Viking stronghold, a layered history now explored at the Jorvik Viking Centre.
