A city, up close

Winchester was the capital of Anglo-Saxon England and, briefly under the Normans, of all England, and Winchester Cathedral — with one of the longest medieval naves in Europe — still dominates the old city. King Alfred the Great was buried here, and the Great Hall, part of Winchester Castle, holds what has long been displayed as "King Arthur's Round Table" — actually a medieval creation from centuries after any historical Arthur.
