Whitby, England

Return to Map

Whitby sits where the River Esk meets the North Sea, its harbour overlooked by the ruined Whitby Abbey on the clifftop above — a ruin that inspired Bram Stoker to set part of Dracula here. The 199 steps leading up to the abbey and St Mary's Church are one of the town's best-known walks, and the town is also known for Captain Cook, who served his apprenticeship in Whitby before his Pacific voyages.
