Warwick Castle, founded by William the Conqueror in 1068 and rebuilt in stone over the following centuries, is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in England and sits above a bend in the River Avon. The town around it largely dates from a rebuilding after a major fire in 1694, giving its centre a distinctly Georgian character, with the medieval Lord Leycester Hospital and the Collegiate Church of St Mary among the buildings that survived it.
