A city, up close

Shrewsbury sits within a near loop of the River Severn, which encircles almost the entire town centre. Its medieval street pattern survives largely intact, including narrow lanes still known by names like Grope Lane and Dogpole, and more timber-framed buildings survive here than in almost any other English town, among them Ireland's Mansion and the Old Market Hall.
