A city, up close

Nottingham is best known for its association with the legend of Robin Hood, and Nottingham Castle — much rebuilt since the medieval fortress of the stories — still sits on the same sandstone outcrop above the city. Beneath the streets lies a network of caves cut into the soft sandstone, used over the centuries as cellars, tanneries, and air-raid shelters, some now open to visitors. The Lace Market, once the centre of the city's lace-making industry, is one of its most walkable historic quarters.
