A city, up close

Newcastle upon Tyne grew up on coal and shipbuilding along the River Tyne, and its most recognisable landmark, the Tyne Bridge, has stood since 1928 — built by the same firm that used a similar, larger-scale design a few years later for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Quayside, lined with converted warehouses and bars, and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art across the river in Gateshead, is one of the city's most walked stretches.
