A city, up close

Liverpool grew into one of Britain's most important ports on the strength of transatlantic trade, and its waterfront — the Royal Albert Dock and the "Three Graces" of the Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building, and Port of Liverpool Building — is one of the country's most striking stretches of Victorian and Edwardian dockside architecture. The city is also known worldwide as the birthplace of the Beatles, with the Cavern Club on Mathew Street among its best-known sites.
