A city, up close
Lincoln Cathedral was, for over two centuries, the tallest building in the world, until its central spire collapsed in a storm in 1548. It still dominates the city from Lincoln's steep, cobbled Steep Hill, one of England's oldest shopping streets, which climbs from the medieval Guildhall at Stonebow up to the cathedral and the adjoining Lincoln Castle, one of the few in England with two mottes.
