A city, up close

Exeter grew up around a Roman legionary fortress, and stretches of Roman wall still stand around parts of the city centre. Exeter Cathedral has the longest uninterrupted medieval vaulted ceiling in the world, and the city's underground passages — medieval tunnels built to carry water into the city — are unusual enough to be one of the only such systems in England open to the public.
