A city, up close

Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle sit together on a rocky peninsula almost encircled by the River Wear, a setting UNESCO recognises as a World Heritage Site. The cathedral, built in the late 11th and early 12th centuries, is considered one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Europe and holds the shrine of St Cuthbert. The cobbled streets of the old town wind steeply down to the riverbanks on both sides.
