A city, up close

Chester is built around a nearly complete circuit of Roman and medieval walls that can still be walked continuously around the city centre. Its most distinctive feature is the Rows — covered, two-tier medieval shopping galleries unique to Chester — and the black-and-white timber-framed buildings along them give the centre a look unlike anywhere else in England. Chester Cathedral and the remains of a Roman amphitheatre, the largest found in Britain, sit close by.
