A city, up close

Canterbury Cathedral, seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury and one of the oldest and most famous Christian sites in England, dominates the city's medieval centre. The city was the destination of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, and its old town — still largely enclosed by medieval walls — is a dense mix of timber-framed buildings, the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey, and the River Stour running through it.
