A city, up close

Bristol grew rich on maritime trade and shipbuilding, and Isambard Kingdom Brunel left two of his best-known works here: the Clifton Suspension Bridge over the Avon Gorge, and the SS Great Britain, his pioneering steamship, now preserved as a museum ship on the harbourside. The city's steep, colourful terraced streets — most famously on Totterdown's hillside — and its street art scene, Banksy is from Bristol, give it a distinct character.
