A city, up close

Brighton grew from a fishing village into one of England's best-known seaside resorts, largely thanks to the Prince Regent, later George IV, who built the Indian- and Chinese-styled Royal Pavilion here in the early 1800s. The pebble beach, Brighton Palace Pier, and the maze of narrow lanes known as The Lanes — full of independent shops — give the seafront and old town very different characters within a short walk of each other.
