A city, up close

Birmingham grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution around its metalworking trades, and it still has more miles of canal than Venice, a legacy of the network built to move goods through the city. The Bullring markets have traded on the same site for centuries, and the Jewellery Quarter — once home to hundreds of small workshops — remains one of the most distinctive parts of the city to walk through.
