A city, up close

Bath takes its name from the Roman baths built around its natural hot springs, still standing in the city centre almost two thousand years later. Its Georgian era left an even bigger mark: the sweeping curve of the Royal Crescent, the Circus, and honey-coloured stone terraces that make the whole city a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bath Abbey rises above the old Roman baths, and the River Avon and Pulteney Bridge — one of the few bridges in the world lined with shops on both sides — sit just a short walk away.
